Description
English: Original caption: "Whether Powel authored the verses or copied them is unclear. Seven stanzas of four lines each, the whole beginning with the line: "No Peerage we covet, No Sceptres desire." A published version in 'Songs, Odes, and Other Poems on National Subjects; compiled from various sources' by Wm. McCarthy (Philadelphia: Wm. McCarthy, 1842), pages 41-42, is slightly longer. An 11 stanza version appeared in 'The Nightingale of Liberty....' (New York: John Harrisson, 1797), pages 13-14; and in "The Columbian Muse, a selection of American poetry from various authors of established reputations" (New York: J.
