ng gives anappearance of great antiquity. The Cathedral was built by the Jesuitstwo centuries ago, in 1704. It occupies the site of an older church.Two of the bells in the tower are dated 1664 and 1698 respectively. Theentrance through a gate at the right of the chapel admits to the triangu-lar courtyard. On the right of this is the ecclesiastical courtroom, thewalls of which are hung with portraits of Bishops of the Island. Be-yond are the cloisters and the patio of the Theological Seminary ofSan Carlos. The door on the left opens into the robing room, wheremay be shown the rich vestments of the clergy, magnificent examples ofembroidery in gold and silver. On the walls are some very old paint-ings. From this room steps lead to the high altar and the chancel. Theinterior walls are finished in dark marbles; the columns are of highlypolished mahogany with gilt-bronzed capitals; the choir stalls are ofmahogany, beautifully carved. IN THE CATHEDRAL. The baldachin contains a sculptured image of Our Lady of the Im-maculate Conception. The floor in front of the altar is a mosaic ofcolored marble. The fine organ was built in Germany. There are many paintings to engage the attention. Those in the domeare of Moses and Prophets and Evangelists, Among the paintings on thewalls are: Abraham and Sarah, to whom the promise is given: Sara 40 THE STASDARD GUIDE. uxor tucv filium Jiabebit—Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son. Christand the Woman of Samaria. A small painting reputed to be jy Murillorepresenting the Pope and the Cardinals celebrating mass preparatory tothe sailing of Columbus. The JNIadonna del Carmen, the Virgin and Childreleasing souls from torment, a favorite subject in Spanish ecclesiasticalart. Maria de la Concepcion, the Immaculate Conception; the Virgin standson a globe with foot resting upon a serpent, typical of her triumph over aworld fallen through sin.
