OLD SPANISH GUNS ON THE RAMPARTS. a sombreness relieved only by the bright color here and there of someflowering shrub; and our unpracticed eye is baffled when we endeavor tocomprehend the plan of work; it is a rambling succession of fortifica-tion within fortification, the whole enormous in extent. There is herenone of the symmetry and the completeness of design of Spanish FortSan Marco in St. Augustine, though in comparison with Cabana theFlorida fort is a toy. Ascending to the ramparts, we gain a commanding view of harborand town and sea and the palm-fringed encircling hills. The antiquatedSpanish guns, elaborately ornamented and bearing each one the name ofa sovereign, are quite in keeping with Cabafias age and uselessness.The marble shaft which rises from the next parapet commemorates thevalor and loyalty of the soldiers of the garrison who repulsed theLopez expedition at Las Pazas in 1851.
