Summary
[edit]DescriptionStairway Rosewell Plantation.jpeg |
English: Photograph of a stairway, Rosewell Plantation, Gloucester County, Virginia, by an unknown photographer, published as an illustration in the book "Some Colonial Mansions and Those Who Lived in Them: With Genealogies of the Various Families Mentioned," written by Thomas Allen Glenn, published at Philadelphia, Pa., by Henry T. Coates & Company, 1899. Following the sale of Rosewell by heirs of the Page family in the 19th century, purchasers of the home stripped it of many of its architectural elements, including much of its mahogany wainscoting, some of which is seen here in the photograph. During the Revolutionary War, Governor John Page of Virginia had had the lead sash weights in the home melted for bullets for Continental forces. The flat lead roof of the home was left by Page, but it was later stripped for salvage by new owners and replaced by an iron roof. |
