Summary

[edit]
Description

Grade I listed.

St Guthlac was an Anglo-Saxon hermit who came to the Island of Crowland in 699AD. The site probably had a church in Anglo-Saxon times as remains of masonry were found in the grounds.

The church dates from the late 12th century onwards, and was restored in 1875 by James Fowler. There is a western tower, clerestoried nave with aisles, chancel, south porch, and vestry. The three stage tower dates from 1440, and has an embattled parapet. There is a painted sundial on the south wall dating from 1710. The nave clerestory has a battlemented parapet with four, two-light windows. The nave has a late 12th century three-bay north arcade, and a 13th century south arcade. The chancel arch was rebuilt in 1875 when renovation was done, the chancel itself dates from circa 1500, and contains a Saxon coffin lid. On the south wall of the chancel are the St Guthlac windows which contain twelve roundels depicting scenes from the life of St Guthlac, copied from the seven hundred year old St Guthlac Roll.

The organ is a two manual by Hill with 13 stops.

The 15th century font has a recut octagonal bowl.
