Text Appearing Before Image:
ury Of the stained glass of the twelfth and thirteenthcenturies, which was once the glory of CanterburyCathedral, only a remnant has escaped the zealof the Puritans. The minister placed in chargeof the Cathedral under the Commonwealth, oneRichard Culmer, known to his enemies as BlueDick, though I do not know why, relates withglee how he stood on a ladder sixty steps highwith a whole pike in his hand and rattled downproud Becketts glassie bones. I own I feel less resentment against BlueDick, who at least thought the windows importantenough to smash, than against that later vandalWyatt, who in the eighteenth century sold theglass at Salisbury for the price of the lead in it,or those who even now in many places are lettingold glass perish for want of proper care. Even Blue Dick seems to have tired of hispious labours before they were quite finished, for,of the early windows, he has left us two in the north PLATE IXWESTERN LANCETS AND ROSE, CHARTRES CATHEDRALTwelfth and Thirteenth Century
Text Appearing After Image:
TWELFTH CENTURY GLASS 57 choir aisle, and four in the Trinity Chapel east ofthe choir, in which most of the old glass remains.Besides these there are many medallions andnumerous fragments scattered about in other win-dows and embedded in the work of the modernrestorer, and several large figures from the cleres-tory, of which the Methuselah in Plate III., nowin the south transept, is one. In the year 1174, four years after Beckets death, the splendid choir built by Prior Conrad in 1130was completely destroyed by fire, and the monksimmediately set about building a new one. Gervasethe monk has left a detailed account of the progressof the great work, year by year and pillar by pillar, for the space of ten years, first under the Frenchmaster-builder, William of Sens, and then underhis successor, William the Englishman (little inbody but in workmanship of many kinds acuteand honest), so that we know just when eachpart of the work was finished. Now in the springof 1180, he relates, the monks
