Text Appearing Before Image:
the whole light, andneither in its proportions nor in its details is it verygraceful. The border is now growing narrowerand narrower, and is eventually doomed to dis-appear altogether. The crockets of the gable arethe only yellow pot-metal used, silver stain beingused everywhere else, and not very artistically, though how far this is due to the restorer it isdifficult to say. The same qualities may be observed in thegreat central west window of the nave, also thework of the glazier Robert. Here, too, thecanopies over the various rows of figures whichform the design meet the feet of the row above, and in the top row shoot up to the head of thelight. Their stiff awkwardness is in curious con-trast to the wonderful flowing grace of the actualtracery of the window which contains them. Thetreatment of the figures, too, is dull. For theeight archbishops who form the bottom row, onlytwo different patterns have been used, and in the PLATE XXXIII DETAILS, FROM ST. OUEX, ROUEN Fourteenth Century
Text Appearing After Image:
FOURTEENTH CENTURY GLASS AT YORK 181 row above the eleven apostles have been got intoeight Hghts by making six of them squeeze, mostuncomfortably, two in a niche. The St. Stephen (Plate XX.) is from the sixthwindow in the south aisle, which seems to be ofabout the same date as the west windows andprobably by the same glazier Robert. Instead ofconforming to the design of the other windows inthe aisle, he has fiUed it with three figures largerthan life under tall canopies. It has likewisesuffered much from eighteenth century restoration(the head, I think, is new), and has, besides, thesame faults as the west windows. To me its chiefinterest is in the ornamentation of the saintsdalmatic, which affords the earliest example Iknow of the use of silver stain on blue glass, which may be seen in the ring-like ornaments onthe blue stripes. The parish churches of Y^ork contain a good All Saints, deal of fourteenth as well as fifteenth century ^^^ ^^^glass. The windows in the west end of the north
