Lebendiges Museum Online: Für den kurz nach Kriegsende im Dezember 1918 von dem Reserveoffizier Franz Seldte in Magdeburg gegründeten "Stahlhelm, Bund der Frontsoldaten" verband sich bereits mit der Namensgebung der Anspruch, eine Organisation zu sein, in der das Wirken aller Kriegsteilnehmer Anerkennung finden sollte. Der Stahlhelm war paramilitärisch organisiert, und für körperlich taugliche Mitglieder galt ab 1928 die Wehrsportdienstpflicht. Trotz nomineller Überparteilichkeit stand der mit seinen 1930 rund 500.000 Mitgliedern stärkste Wehrverband des Deutschen Reichs in eindeutiger Opposition zum politischen System der Weimarer Republik.

Der Stahlhelm ("The Steel Helmet, League of Front-Line Soldiers") was a paramilitary right-wing organisation 1918–1935; Scharnhorst was a militaristic youth organization integrated into the Hitler Youth in 1933.
