Description
La decoració de l’absis de Santa Maria d’Àneu és una mostra de la superposició de temes i motius de l’Antic i del Nou Testament a la pintura romànica catalana. A la volta hi ha representada l’Epifania, amb Maria en Majestat i els Mags. Al registre inferior, apareixen els dos serafins de la visió d’Isaïes al temple de Jerusalem (Is 6,3-6) que canten «S(AN)C(TU)S S(AN)C(TU)S S(AN)C(TU)S» i apropen les tenalles amb brases ardents als llavis dels profetes Elies i Isaïes. Al mig, les quatre rodes de foc del carro de Jahvè al·ludeixen a la visió d’Ezequiel (Ez 1,15). Cal subratllar també el protagonisme dels tres arcàngels, Miquel, Gabriel i Rafael, advocats el dia del Judici Final. Aquesta original temàtica troba la seves fonts en repertoris bizantinitzants d’Itàlia.
