Description
English: St Swithin's Church, Bintree, Norfolk, mural monument of Captain Lord James Nugent Boyle Bernardo Townshend (1785-1842), of Yarrow House in the parish of Bintree, youngest son of w:George Townshend, 1st Marquess Townshend (1724-1807) by his second wife Anne Montgomery, a daughter of Sir William Montgomery, 1st Baronet. See better image[1]. He married Elizabeth Wallis, a daughter of Provo Featherstone Wallis and sister of Admiral of the Fleet Sir Provo William Parry Wallis (1791-1892). Arms: Azure, a chevron ermine between three escallops argent (Townshend) impaling Ermine, a bend sable (?) (Wallis) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.1068 "Wallis of Somerset"). The British origins of the father Provo Featherstone Wallis, a clerk at the Royal Naval Dockyard, Halifax, Nova Scotia, are unclear. The chancel is dated by the C12 pillar piscina; the nave and the long south transept - making the church L-shaped > 893531 - 893547 - date from the 13th century; the tower was added a century later. The church > 893331 - 893542 - 893553 was rebuilt and restored in the 18th and 19 centuries but has retained its C14 font > 893554. The stained glass windows are C19 - the east window > 893544 was made by Alexander Gibbs and the south transept windows > 893549 - 893550 are by William Wailes. The grass in the eastern and northern sections of the churchyard has not been cut and conceals an a 13th century stone coffin lid. The church is kept locked but a key is available on request.
