Description
English: Front of a Russia stampless folded paid letter to France. 'St. PETERSBOURG 1856 IX 4' lozenge shape cancel, boxed 'Aus Russland' (T.P.O.) transit, blue 'PRUSSE/3/VALENCIENNES 20 NOV 56', Paris and Paris to Reims transits, arrival backstamp Reims.

Details:

  • November 4 (Julian) 1856 a paid letter inside datelined 1/13 November (Julian/Gregorian calendar) posted by beer brewer CHs. Krohn & Co. at St. Petersburg to L. Roederer in Reims. Sender or post office clerk wrote on lower corner left 'Franco', this is not restated by handstamp. Reverse '1856 - St. PETERSBOURG - IX 4' postmark applied, the setting was wrongfully 'IX' instead of 'XI'.

CHs. Krohn & Co. was the first Russian brewer for beer in English style (still exists, Stepan Razin).

Dobin: 1.02 type 3.07. Transit postmark, used 1854-1859, Rarity 4.[1]
  • Red 'Aus Russland' postmark applied. Used as a German entry/transit mark aboard the Coeln-Verviers T.P.O.
Vandervelde: type CV5, 39x10mm.
  • November 20 (Gregorian). Blue 'PRUSSE 3 VALENCIENNES 20 NOV 56' French entry mark, mail from Prussia (Prusse) entering France at the border town of Valenciennes. The small 3's show this mark was struck at Paris.
Noël: #1021[2]
  • Same day Paris transit 'Paris 3 (60) 20 NOV. 56', and Paris transit marking (unreadable), at reverse.
  • November 21. Reims arrival backstamp. 'REIMS (xx) 21 NOV. 56' applied at reverse.
