Description

Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul, Kimpton, Hertfordshire. <a href="http://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-162033-parish-church-of-st-peter-and-st-paul-ki" rel="nofollow">Grade I</a>. Photographed 1 January 2013.

Here is a view of the nave, with the pillars and arches of the north and south aisles on either side, and even the organ can be seen on the left. Up ahead is the chancel, which was added to the original wooden church* in the 12th century and extended to its present size in the 13th century. The nave and the chancel are not in line with each other and the nave is out of square which is probably due to the original wooden church being of an irregular shape*. Unfortunately, I did not take a closer picture of the chancel, other than the window. The chancel originally had three lancet windows in the east wall, and they were replaced in the 14th century by a single three-light window. The remains of two of the original windows can be seen here, and traces of an original wall painting can be seen on the northern jamb, though not in this picture. The altar is also visible here, which is smaller than the one that was in place in the 1900s, and has been repositioned as well.

  • there is no archaeological evidence of a wooden church existing on this site, and it seems unlikely that there was one.
