Summary

[edit]
Description

Hatchment (sinister/wife's half black) to Mary Penelope Strutt, a daughter of William Strutt of Sudbury, Suffolk, and wife of John Meadows Theobald II (1748-1830) of Henley Hall and Claydon Hall. (Identification per Wikipedia) No impaled arms of a wife appear to be shown, to help confirm an identification.

Heraldry

Arms: Quarterly of 4:

  • 1: Sable, a fess embattled between three owls argent (Theobald) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.1005: "Theobald of Barking Hall, Suffolk")
  • 2: Sable, a chevron ermine between three pelicans wings endorsed or vulned proper (Meadows) (Papwoth, I, p.402) (Burke, 1884, p.675, but with field azure - as Culme). Also arms of Meade, Mede, etc. These are a difference of the arms of Culme of Devon (also Cullom, etc), which have a field azure. As "culm-land" is "meadow-land", used for livestock grazing, it appears that one family adopted a differenced version of the other's arms on the basis of the similar apparent meaning of the surnames.
  • 3: Gules, on a chief argent a lion passant guardant of the field (? Brooke of Whalley, Lancashire) (Papwoth, John Woody, Alphabetical Dictionary of Coats of Arms Belonging to Families in Great Britain and Ireland, Vol.I, London, 1874, p.564)
  • 4: Sable, a chevron argent between three maiden's heads couped at the shoulders proper hair dishevelled or (? Eastfield) (Papwoth, I, p.447, but with chevron ermine), possibly Vaughan or Parry.

Genealogical notes

The Meadows family were seated at Witnesham in Suffolk in 1187 (per Gent. Mag. for 1824, Part ii., p.518[1]). In 1630 Ralph Meadows (1600-1679) (3rd son of William Meadows of Witnesham Hall, Suffolk) (John Burke, Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Commoners of Great Britain, Vol.II, London, 1835, p.649[2]) purchased the Henley Hall estate. In 1774 the surname was changed to Theobald by ‌‌‌‌John‌‌ ‌‌‌‌Meadows‌‌‌‌ "‌‌‌‌the‌‌‌‌ ‌‌‌‌elder" (d.1788) by private Act of Parliament. (1774 Chapter 14 George III. c. 84, Long title: "An‌‌‌‌‌ ‌‌‌‌Act‌‌‌‌ ‌‌‌‌‌to‌‌‌‌‌ ‌‌enable‌‌‌‌ ‌‌‌‌John‌‌ ‌‌‌‌Meadows‌‌‌‌ ‌‌‌‌the‌‌‌‌ ‌‌‌‌elder‌‌,‌‌‌‌ ‌‌‌‌‌Gentleman‌‌‌,‌‌‌ ‌‌‌and‌‌‌ ‌‌‌his‌‌ ‌‌Issue‌‌ ‌Male, to take, use and bear the Surname and Arms of Theobald, pursuant to the Will of Elizabeth Theobald Widow, deceased"[3]).‌‌‌‌ Source of following pedigree: Augustine Page, Topographical and Genealogical History of the County of Suffolk, Ipswich, 1817, pp.604-5[4]:

  • John‌‌ ‌‌‌‌Meadows‌‌‌‌ ‌‌‌‌the‌‌‌‌ ‌‌‌‌elder "John Meadows Theobald I" (d.1788) served as Sheriff of Suffolk in 1787 and died in 1788. His son was:
    • John Meadows Theobald II (1748-1830) of Claydon Hall, DL, JP, a Major in the 1st Regiment, Suffolk Yeomanry Cavalry. He married firstly Mary Snell, a daughter of William Snell of Needham Market, without issue; secondly he married Mary Penelope Strutt, a daughter of William Strutt of Sudbury, Suffolk, by whom he had one son and one daughter:
      • Rev. John Meadows Theobald III, owner of Henley in 1817. See his memorial tablet in Henley Church. His son was:
        • John Meadows Theobald IV (d.1876), killed at Deyrah in the East Indies; his memorial is in the east of the churchyard.
