English: The ruin of St Peter's parish church, Castle Green, Bristol, England, seen from the south. In this view from St Philip's Bridge this church looks as if it's in the heart of the country. Actually it's within an area around Bristol Castle in Bristol Centre that was badly bombed during WW2. The church was built in the late 11th century by the castle's owner, Robert Fitzhamon. During the 13th,14th and 15th centuries it was enlarged in various styles including Early English and Perpendicular Gothic.
During the Civil War the governor of the castle was a Parliamentarian. He ordered the demolition of both the this and nearby St Philip's churches to prevent the Royalists from taking up positions in them. Fortunately the arrival of Prince Rupert with an army of 20,000 Royalists prevented this. In an air-raid of November 24th, 1940, much of central Bristol was destroyed. The castle was flattened but the church survived as a shell. After the war the area was converted into the park now known as Castle Green. What remained of the Church were designated a war memorial. |
