Summary

[edit]
Description

Melbourne’s first dedicated Arabic Christian Church was acquired from the Congregational Church in 1932 by the Syrian Orthodox community. It is elaborately decorated internally with murals and is an early example of the reuse of a western Christian church by a migrant orthodox community. The first Lebanese (then known as Syrian) immigrants began arriving in Australia in the 1880s and 1890s. The Orthodox among them helped to establish the first Greek Orthodox Church in Melbourne: the Holy Annunciation in East Melbourne in 1902. In 1932 the Syrian community established their own church. They purchased the former Congregational Church on the corner of Victoria

Parade and Simpson Street, built in the Early English Gothic style in 1862. The architect was possibly Charles Webb.
