Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt Nicholas' Church - geograph.org.uk - 1706099.jpg |
English: St Nicholas' Church The current building dates mainly from around 1460, replacing a previous building on the site. The very small blocked window above the west window of the nave (to the right of the tower) was discovered in 1957 and is thought to date from the mid 11th century, as the only external remnant of the earlier building. The south aisle (the part of the building on the right in this photo) was added in 1849 to a design of Benjamin Ferry (the doorway and windows from the original building, were re-used in the new aisle). The steeple was extended to its present height after the original was destroyed in a fire in 1857. The building is grade II* listed - for listing particulars see http://www.heritagegateway.org.uk/Gateway/Results_Single.aspx?uid=358409&resourceID=5. |
