Summary

[edit]
Description
English: St Michael and All Angels Rampisham Set on a hillside above the manor and the village, the church has connections with Pugin, who designed the chancel and the font, and J Hicks who later restored the body of the church. The young apprentice Thomas Hardy accompanied his master Mr Hicks and noticed the carving of a kneeling ox in the bottom of the tower. This made a great impression on him and this is where it is thought he got the idea for his poem "The Oxen" and the saga of the ox in Tess of the D'Urbervilles.
