Summary

[edit]
Description
English: St Michael's Church, Broome, Norfolk - view west. There are 7 funeral hatchments in the church, the oldest being of Sir William Cooke (d.1681), with five of the Fowle family. Sir John Fowle (died 1732) has a monument to "left of chancel arch". (The Guide to Norfolk Churches: Third Revised and Enlarged Edition, By D P Mortlock, C V Roberts, p.51[1]). Arms of Fowle: Argent, a chevron gules on a chief of the last three mullets of the first (Source: Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.372 "Fowle of Sandhurst, Kent & Salhurst, Sussex").

Fowle family:

  • Sir John Fowle (1666-1732) has a monument to "left of chancel arch". He married Anne Mingay (1665-1701) of Saxlingham[2]. Arms of Mingay: Or, on a bend sable three leopard's faces argent, as shown on one of the hatchments, see image[3]
  • Will of Dioness Fowle, "Widow of Broome Hall , Norfolk", date: 26 September 1822
  • Sir William Fowle Middleton, 1st Baronet (8 November 1748 – 26 December 1829) of Shrubland Hall, in 1823 adopted the additional name of Fowle under the will of John Fowle of Broome, Norfolk.

St Michael's church > 1406557 - 1406574 is located some distance away from the village at the end of an unsurfaced track and surrounded by fields on all sides > 1406536. Until 1825 Broome Hall used to keep it company, adjoining the church in the north but the buildings have since been demolished and nothing remains. The church dates largely from the 14th and 15th centuries but after an extensive restoration in the 19th century nothing much has survived which dates from before this time. The octagonal font bowl is a 19th century replacement which rests on the original late C14 stem > 1406585. The south door > 1406572 is medieval and there are two small stained glass roundels high up in the tracery of a nave south window. What remains of a brass > 1406577 is believed to have been a memorial to Robert de Brome (died 1455) and his wife Olivia.
