Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt Michael's church - view east - geograph.org.uk - 1385398.jpg |
English: St Michael's church - view east. St Michael's church > 1385205 is set back from The Street. Although the church is situated on an elevation above the village it cannot be seen because it has no tower which might indicate its location from a distance. St Mary's lost its round tower which was decayed and cracked, when it eventually collapsed in 1774. The church was built on the site of a small flint church which stood here in Anglo-Saxon times but the building, as we see it today, originates from the 13th century. Restored in the late 19th century, St Mary's has retained the original C13 door knocker on the south door, the C15 font > 1027158 and a Jacobean pulpit > 1385403. The east window > 1385406 contains medieval glass and the C16 arms of Baxter of Rainforth, the lords of the manor. The main figure depicting St Peter > 1385413 is later and probably originates from elsewhere. The church is open every Saturday. |
