English: St Michael's church - the war memorial. The doors open and reveal a list of names > 1492619 of local men who lost their lives 'For God, King and Country'.
St Michael's church > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1492581 - https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1492602 is situated some distance away from any road, next-door to The Grange > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1380132 and adjoined by a woodland in the south. It can be reached via a public footpath which traverses a paddock > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1380127. It is believed that St Michael replaced an earlier Norman church. The building as we see it today dates mainly from the 14th century and was restored in the early 19th century when the chancel was rebuilt. St Michael's shares with All Saints church in Chedgrave > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1361754 and St Ethelbert's church in Thurton > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1313165 a collection of 17th century Continental stained glass > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1492653 - https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1492665 - https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1492655. Much of it came from Rouen in France - which was imported for the Beauchamp Proctor family of Langley Park by JC Hampp of Norwich. The church houses a number of memorials > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1492640 to the Beauchamp Proctor family. The building is presently undergoing restoration work and is kept locked. |
