Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt Mary the Virgin, Bletchingley - geograph.org.uk - 36327.jpg |
English: St Mary the Virgin, Bletchingley. The tower dates back to circa 1090, with the porch and oak door dating to 1460. The tower originally had a spire, but this was destroyed when it was struck by lightning in 1606. The nave is comparatively modern, being built in 1856.
Just beneath the window covered with glass is a smaller round hole (partially covered by a gravestone in this picture). This was possibly used by Roger the Hermit, who is said to have visited these parts in the 13th-century. |
