Arms of Harvy of Vange in Essex

Mural monument in St Mary's Church, Haddiscoe, Norfolk, to Elizabeth Harvy (1643-1671) wife of Rev. Charles Ashby (d.1699/1700), Rector of Haddiscoe, who in a spurious pedigree published in Wotton's Baronetage of 1727, is stated to have been the 3rd Baronet (grandson of Sir Francis Ashby, 1st Baronet, of Harefield, Middlesex, who is known to have died without male issue). Rev. Charles Ashby (d.1699/1700) died whilst bathing in the River Waveney. (Source: Collectanea Topographica et Genealogica, Volume 5, London, 1838, pp.125-7[1])

Inscribed in Latin: Carolus Ashby ecclesiae huius rector, memoriae Elizabethae filia Samuelis Harvy de Wange in com. Essex, generosi, conjugis castissimae monumentum hoc amoris ergo dedicat, obiit Apr. 19, 1671, aetat. suae 28 (Source: Francis Blomefield, 'Clavering Hundred: Hadescoe', in An Essay Towards A Topographical History of the County of Norfolk: Volume 8 (London, 1808), pp. 13-16 [2]) ("Charles Ashby, Rector of this church, to the memory of Elizabeth, daughter of Samuel Harvy of Vange in Essex, Gentleman, his most chaste wife, dedicated this monument of love, she died Apr. 19, 1671, of her age 28"). Arms: Azure, a chevron or between three eagles displayed with two heads argent (Ashby baronets of Harefield, Middlesex (Collectanea Topographica et Genealogica)) impaling: Or, a chevron between three leopard's faces gules (Harvey) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.463 "Harvey of Essex and London"). Seeminglu descended from Harvey of Cotwalton, Stone, Staffordshire.

Genealogy of Harvey

John Harvey, Esq., (d.1718) of Old Buckenham, Norfolk, married Elizabeth Houblon, a daughter of Sir w:James Houblon (1629-1700), of Winchester Street, City of London, and Leyton, Essex, MP for the City of London 1698-1700, merchant and a member of the Dyers’ Company. His grandfather was William Hervey (1559-1662), Sheriff of the City of London, son of Robert Hervey, Comptroller of the Customs in the Port of London. Similar arms ( Or, on a chevron between three leopards' faces gules a crescent of the field) were borne by Sir James Harvey (d.1583), Lord Mayor of London in 1581-2, son of William Harvey, Gent., of Cotwalton, near Stone, Staffordshire, and father of Sir w:Sebastian Harvey (d.1621), Lord Mayor of London in 1618.
