| Description |
English: St Mary's church interior The present church dates only from 1855/7 when it was completely rebuilt. The previous structure was small and had fallen into severe disrepair: it was described by contemporaries as mean, dilapidated and uncomfortable; local butchers displayed their meat along the walls.
The vicar, William Rowlands, who was instrumental in constructing the new church had a fight on his hands to raise funds and to overcome the opposition of the local dissenters. An amateur architect who was holiday here came up with the design after previous plans were deemed too expensive. It was a workaday structure with two side aisles and, with a gallery, able to seat over 500. The organ, pulpit and lectern date from the early years of the C20. |
