Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt Mary's church - rood screen detail - geograph.org.uk - 897716.jpg |
English: St Mary's church - rood screen detail. St Mary's church > 897706 - 897708 is a large building adjoining the market square of the village, which used to be the centre of the Worstead cloth trade until up to the 19th century. Sir Nikolaus Pevsner describes St Mary's as "externally one of the dozen or so grandest Norfolk parish churches. Built in the 14th century has retained the original font with its quite extensively restored wooden cover. There are altogether four screens, all restored in the 19th century. The tall rood screen (detail seen here, see also > 897713) is dated by inscription to 1512; the parclose screens > 897719 are C15 and have four painted panels each; the tower screen > 897728 dates from the 19th century, and the painted panels > 897731 are copies of windows by Sir Joshua Reynolds at New College, Oxford. The stalls in the nave have poppyheads and there are C18 box pews with high-backed walls. Fragments of C14 paintings and consecration crosses remain on the walls, and on the floor there are several C15 and C16 brasses. The church is open every day.
