Summary

[edit]
Description
English: St Mary's church - rood screen. St Mary's, believed to have been built on the site of an older Norman church, has its tower placed at the west end of the south aisle, making it possible for a large west window > 931927 to be inserted at the west end of the nave. The east window dates from the 19th century. The majority of the building is from the 14th century > 931906 - 310326 - 931915 - 931926. The north porch is C15 > 931908. The C15 rood screen - for detail see > 931914 - decorated with a stencilled pattern depicting roses and fleur de lys, has survived an extensive 19th century restoration, as has the C17 pulpit > 931920. The box pews in the nave are 19th century but the octagonal font > 931929 is C13; the font cover is modern (1962). St Mary's church is open every day. The overgrown ruin of St Andrew's church > 519941 - 519949 is located in the same square, a short distance further to the east.
