Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt Mary's church - geograph.org.uk - 834464.jpg |
English: St Mary's church. By the junction of the A149 > 834441 with Broad Lane > 834433.
St Mary's church, built in the 14th century by using remains of the Roman camp, has been extensively restored during the 19th century when the building received new roofs, and again in the 20th century when new pews and the east window were installed > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/834477 - https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/834480. Earlier, in the 17th century, restoration work was done on the south windows. The elaborately carved font canopy, however, was donated in 1493 and still covers the original C14 font > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/834491 - it has been repaired, and is held in place and supported by a metal frame with telescopic mechanism so that it can be elevated when the font is being used. Two massive C17 almsboxes with three locks each still stand at the west end. The chancel was repaired in 1831/32 by the Rev'd Henry Holloway at the expense of the parishioners. The east window glass was inserted in memory of the Rector's wife, Muriel Constance Amy Daubeney (d. 1907) > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/834483 - https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/834486. The church is open every day. For more information see: http://www.norfolkchurches.co.uk/brancaster/brancaster.htm |
