[edit]DescriptionSt Mary's Church on the Daffodil Way - geograph.org.uk - 769631.jpg |
English: St Mary's Church on the Daffodil Way On the south side of the Kempley lane stretch of the Daffodil Way and well worth a look, particularly when the churchyard is full of daffodils in the spring. The church is 11th century (one of the oldest Norman churches in the country) and contains superb wall paintings dating from the 12th, 13th, & 14th centuries. It is believed to have been built to replace the original Anglo Saxon church by Hugh de Lacy, a Norman baron, whose father came over with William the Conqueror.
Saint Mary's Church, situated in an area of Gloucestershire known for its Norman parish churches, was built in the twelfth century, with the west tower being added a century later. The nave roof is the oldest in north-west Europe, being dated circa 1140 AD. The nave ceiling is a seventeenth century addition. The frescoes and wall paintings are also twelfth-century, and are some of the most important in England. |
