Inscribed on the frame "Rev'd Seymour Leeke of Yaxley Hall, died March 2nd 1786 aged 43 years". Arms: Argent, on a saltire engrailed sable nine annulets or (Leke (Earl of Scarsdale) / Leeke of "Hallom", Nottinghamshire (now "Halam") (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.595). See his portrait "Reverend Seymour Leeke of Yaxley Hall (1743–1786), Clergyman", by John Saunders Senior (active 1750–1783), Government Art Collection[1]. Text from catalogue entry, Government Art Collection, expanded: Seymour Leeke was the son of Nicholas Leeke (d.1760) of of w:Sutton Scarsdale Hall near Chesterfield in Derbyshire, an illegitimate son of w:Nicholas Leke, 4th Earl of Scarsdale (1682–1736) by his mistress "Madame Margaret Seymour". (see E.Farrer, Yaxley Hall Its Owners and Occupiers, Part 2, the Leekes 1736 1905, published 1917, pp.135 et seq [2]) His uncle died in 1747, his father in 1760 and his elder brother, Henry, at the Battle of Fort Washington in 1776. As a result, Leeke inherited the remaining fortune of the Earls of Scarsdale and the Yaxley Hall estate. This portrait was painted when Leeke was a student at St Peter’s College, Cambridge, and includes his college cap and gown. The Reverend Seymour Leeke is depicted in a blue coat, with a white satin flowered waistcoat beneath. He wears bright yellow breeches and striped white stockings. He also wears a gown and holds a college cap with a gold tassel. Lying at his feet is a greyhound. Although he was subsequently ordained, there is no record of him being appointed a curate. In 1773 he married Mary Rant, daughter of Humphrey Rant of Dickleburgh, Norfolk. The couple separated after a month and Mary retuned to Dickleburgh. Later that year Leeke made a tour of France and Belgium. By October 1778 he had purchased the Manor of Groton, Suffolk, which he retained until c.1784. On Boxing Day, 1785, he moved to Great Queen Street, London, where he died. Re Leeke of Halam, from "White's Directory of Nottinghamshire" for 1853[3]: There was an ancient capital messuage and a good demesne, all freehold, the inheritance of Leek of Halam, of which family Adam Leek deceased 1673, son and heir of Herbert Leek, being left by his father in as much debt as this old seat was worth, and having married the heiress of Bollet de Osberton, removed thither, and sold his interest at Halam to Richard Lloyd Esq., who was high sheriff of this county in 1673. He built a large house of brick and stone, where he resided for many years. It afterwards passed to Mrs Leybourne of Dalby, near Castle Howard in the county of York, and was purchased of her representatives by the present owner, William Flint Esq., in 1848, who has made great improvements, having taken most of the remaining old thatched buildings down and rebuilt them of brick and tile. He has also erected a neat and good house in which he resides. The only part remaining of the ancient buildings are a large dovecote, and the old brick wall which encloses the orchard in front of the street. |
