Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt Mary's Church, Penterry - geograph.org.uk - 1535943.jpg |
English: St Mary's Church, Penterry. From the information board outside: "The earliest church at Penterry is mentioned in documents as being in existence in 955AD and land at Penterry (or Pentiry) is confirmed in the charter of Tintern Abbey granted in the early part of the 12th century by Gilbert, Earl of Pembroke. It is believed that one of the granges (or farms) of Tintern Abbey was called Secular Firmary, which included much of the land in Penterry.
Between 1853 and 1861, architects Seddon and Pritchard restored the church, adding the bell-cote and changing the original entrance, from where the single light window is today, to the Victorian porch. Nothing now survives of the earliest church but all the walls of the nave and chancel are medieval with the Norman lancet or leper window dating from the late 12th century. The east window dates from the 15th century and the piscina, where sacred vessels were washed, from the late 13th or early 14th century. The church has no electricity and uses oil lamps. The single bell was cast in Chepstow, in 1734, by William Evans at his foundry in Welsh Street." See also : 1535969, 1535988 from the east, and 1536011 from SSW, and 1536056 |
