Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Location: Trafalgar Square, City of Westminster, London.

The present church was built 1722 - 1724 replacing the church built for King Henry VIII in 1542 to avoid plague victims from the area having to pass through his Palace of Whitehall. At the time this church literally was in the fields.

The neoclassical design was by James Gibbs and incorporated a portico with a pediment supported by a magnificent order of Corinthian columns, six wide. The total build cost was £33,661, including the architect's fees.
