Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt Martin's Church - stained glass window - geograph.org.uk - 931714.jpg |
English: St Martin's Church - stained glass window. St Martin's church is located on an elevation above the Shell Museum > 242242 - 931704 - the oldest purpose-built museum in Norfolk. Built by Sir Alfred Jodrell of nearby Bayfield Hall > 49720 to accommodate his personal collection, the museum houses the finest seashell collection in the UK as well as fossils, birds' eggs, agate ware, local archaeological finds and many more fascinating items. Bayfield Hall and its Estate, which encompasses much of the land in and around the village of Glandford, was inherited in 1882 by the late Sir Alfred Jodrell, Baronet, described as a gentleman of great generosity, who set about rebuilding the village. The church was rebuilt from a ruin, in memory of his mother, Adele Monckton; the rebuilding began on 17 October 1899 and was completed on 30 August 1906. Interestingly, Sir Alfred never attempted to rebuild the ruined church of St Margaret > 519928 - 519932 which is located in the grounds of Bayfield Hall. St Martin's church > 931706 contains elaborate woodcarving > 931709 - 931710 including a pew which was occupied by Sir Alfred Jodrell himself; the stained glass windows are by Kempe and Bryans, the best known stained glass studios in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The elaborately carved font > 931716 is one of only two existing modern (early C20) seven sacrament fonts in East Anglia. The church is open every day.
