Description This photo was taken from the USFWS Southeast Region's helicopter during a prescribed fire in June of 2012 at St Marks NWR nearly 7,000 acres were burned in one day. The prescribed fire was conducted to reduce the danger of wildfires to the surrounding communities of St Marks and Panacea, FL. The fire is a natural disturbance that helps manage the habitat and improve the health of the ecosystem, without fire the habitat becomes less welcoming to many of the native species in the southeast. - Photo: USFWS
