Summary

Description
English: St Margaret's church - C13 baptismal font. St Margaret's church is set back from The Common and hidden from view by surrounding houses. It can be reached via Port Row, a path that leads past a row of cottages straight to the churchyard gate > 898990. The church > 899029 - 308693 - 899081 was built in the 13th century; its porch is C15 and has a 17th century brick gable and the main door is still the original one, dating from the 15th century. The chancel was rebuilt in 1912 without altering its foundations; it is noticeably unaligned with the adjoining nave and it is believed that the church once used to have a north aisle and north arcading. The ringing gallery was added in 1991. A C13 Purbeck marble font (seen here) survives and a glass case on the chancel south wall contains the Lyng Pall, an altar cloth which was made from C15 vestments: two copes and chasuble in red, blue and amber velvet with intricate embroidery, depicting apostles, saints and angels standing on their wheels > 899067 - 899073. A large figure depicting St Margaret, with a dragon at her feet, was created by Farrar Bell in 1968 and set in the centre light of the east window > 899060 - this is the only stained glass now in the church. The church is open every day. See also: http://www.norfolkchurches.co.uk/lyngmargaret/lyngmargaret.htm
