| Description |
Kirkwall is the capital of the Orkney Islands, which lie to the North of Scotland. Although the islands have been settled since pre-historic times they lie at a similar latitude to St Petersburg in Russia and parts of Alaska. The cathedral - which is the most northerly in the United Kingdom - dates all the way back to 1137, when there were very strong links with Norway, across the North Sea. The diocese was under the authority of the Archbishop of Nidaros in Norway. The cathedral sits in the centre of town and is owned by the Burgh of Kirkwall and not the Presbyterian Church of Scotland who use it as a parish church. The local red and yellow sandstone used in the construction give the building a distinctive look. |
