Description

St Lawrence's Church, Beeston St Lawrence, Norfolk, mural monument to Alice Durrant (1716-1743), only surviving daughter and heiress of William Durrant, Esquire, of Suffield in Norfolk (of the Durrant family of Scottow, Norfolk), by his wife Alice Clough, one of the (daughters and) co-heiresses of Rev. James Clough, MA, of Pemberton, Lancashire, Rector of Suffield, Norfolk (see mural monument of Rev. James Clough in Suffield Church, which states that his son-in-law was "William Durrant of Suffield" File:-2018-12-10 Memorial, Saint Margaret of Antioch parish church, Suffield, Norfolk.JPG) (details from her ledger stone in Beeston St Lawrence Church[1]), first wife of Isaac Preston (1710-1768) of Beeston St Lawrence, barrister-at-law. Inscribed at top in Latin: Alicia Preston exor mater amicitiae exemplar generis in tabula infra depicti decus obiit 27 Apr(ili)s 1743 huius pie memor hoc amoris perenne pignus posuit maritus Isaacus Preston eundem subiturus tumulum ne morte segregentur cineres ("Alice Preston a .... mother a model of friendship of family shown on the tablet below ... died 27 of April 1743. In pious memory of her this (monument) as a pledge of everlasting love her husband Isaac Preston placed, about to enter beneath into the same grave lest by death their ashes should be separated"). St Lawrence's Church must surely have the most complete set of genealogical monuments in England! All familial relationships of the Preston family are explained in detail, over several generations, with coats of arms, some with duplicate monuments for husband and wife[2].

Arms: Ermine, on a chief sable three crescents or (Preston) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.823) with inescutcheon of pretence: Erminois, a cross crosslet ermines (Durrant of Scottow) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.309, but with field "ermine" not as seen here "erminois" and cross "sable" not as seen here "ermines") quartering Gules, three pineapples (slipped) argent (Clough) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.206 "Clough of Minsterly, Yorkshire (sic)" - apparently meaning Minsterley Hall, Minsterley, Shropshire, built in 1581 by Robert Clough[4]). Of the Clough family of Minsterley, Shropshire, the names of the first five generations are given in Marl.MS.1396,fo.69 1241, fo.68, where the arms are given as: Gules, three pine-apples slipped argent a martlet for difference (source: http://www.cluett.org.uk/anjou.html) (see also relief-sculpted image[5]). Shown more clearly as pineapples sculpted on monument to Rev. James Clough in Suffield Church, but shown more vaguely as roses or leafy vines on monuments in Beeston St Lawrence Church.
