Archive image of the old and new St John the Evangelist churches at Wortley, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. Confusion has arisen because the names of the churches, parishes and districts are so similar. The image above is of St John the Evangelist, Dixon Lane, Wortley, Leeds. The chapel on the left of the image was built in 1787 ish under the patronage of John Smyth Lord of the Manor of Wortley. The right hand one was built in 1898 and still stands. The church designed by Dobson was called St John the Baptist. It was in New Wortley, built around 1854, under the patronage of Dr Hook and this was bombed during the second world was and demolished afterwards. Photographs can be seen on Leodis website. It was on Spence Lane. If you look on Leodis Website (photographs of Leeds ) you will be able to see the bombed out church of St John the Baptist, Spence Lane, Holbeck. This was the New Wortley church and is no longer extant. |
