Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt Helens Well Great Hatfield.jpg |
English: St Helen's Well, Great Hatfield, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Ancient spring or holy well dedicated to the mother of Constantine the Great (proclaimed Emperor of Rome in York in A.D.306), which was rededicated on St. Helen's day 18th August 1995. St. Helen is said to have gone on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land where she discovered Christ's cross and the nails used in his crucifixion. The well near the cemetery at Great Hatfield is also known as Rag Well because pieces of clothing or lace would be dipped in the water and knotted on the hawthorn hedges as a thanksgiving for blessings to be received. |
