Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt Giles' interior - geograph.org.uk - 432807.jpg |
English: St Giles' interior The church was severely damaged during WW2: so many bombs fell on that even the cement caught fire. However, the shell, the arcade in the chancel(seen here), the roof and the tower remained; all the rest has been rebuilt or replaced including this east window.
On the left can be seen one of the few surviving memorials, to John Speed, historian and map-maker during the reigns of Elizabeth I and James I. He and his wife are buried here. Alongside it is a plaque recording the death of Martin Frobisher (1535 to 1594), another local resident, who was an explorer of the North-West passage, and died from wounds sustained in a naval battle during the Spanish Armada. |
