Description
English: St Giles's Church, Houghton St Giles, Norfolk, mural monument on the north side of the chancel to William Fenn (1652-1702), inscribed (Francis Blomefield, 'North Greehow Hundred: Houghton', in An Essay Towards A Topographical History of the County of Norfolk: Volume 9 (London, 1808), pp. 244-247 [1]):
Memoriae Sacrum Vivit hoc marmor Gulielmi Fenn, Generosi Deo obsequetissimi filii. et Ecclesiae Uxori suae amantissimi mariti, Liberis indulgentissimi patris et Pauperibus Qui caelo maturus suum mortale exuit 5to (i.e. quinto) die Januarii An(no) D(omi)ni 1702 aetat(is) 50.

Which may be translated:

"This marble sacred to the memory of William Fenn, Gentleman, a son most dutiful to God and the Church, a husband most loving to his wife, a father most indulgent to his children, and to the poor. Who .... departed to Heaven on the 5th day of January in the year of our Lord 1702, of his age 50"

Arms: Argent, on a fess azure three escallops of the first a bordure engrailed of the second (Fenn) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.345 "Fenn of East Dereham, Norfolk").

General notes

Next to a statue of St Giles. St Giles' church > 874650 - 874659 is located beside the Fakenham to Walsingham road, a short distance from the village of Little Walsingham which lies across the River Stiffkey and enjoys many thousands of visitors and pilgrims every summer weekend, who come to visit the Catholic National Shrine of Our Lady. St Giles' was rebuilt by architect William Eden Nesfield in 1877, re-using much of the original materials. An unusual rood screen, dating from the 15th century, survives > 874651. Unusual, because the panels on the north side do not depict saints or apostles but a sequence of the Holy Kinship, ie portraits of women that are associated with Christ and the Disciples > 874653. The church is usually open. For more information see:
