DescriptionSt Georges Parade Herne Bay 1906.jpg |
Postcard of St George's Parade, Herne Bay, Kent, England, postmarked 1906. The photo was taken from the pier, and shows the beach west of the pier, with St George's terrace in the background. A parade of horses headed by three marching musicians, heralds or soldiers is appearing on the parade from the left. The central portico of St George's Terrace can be seen above the rows of seafront kiosks, and this portico belonged to a boys' school which occupied all the floors and basements of two or three residences. The door and lower windows of the school are open, and some white-clad female staff are out watching something. There were thousands of service staff in Herne Bay in that era. They are unseen in most postcards, but constituted the machinery which ran Herne Bay. Servants began employment at age 12, and for every child you see on the beach, there were more in service in the buildings behind. Gertrude Mabel Warner ("Little Warner", 1896-1979) was forced into service at the boys' school at age 12 in 1906. She was brought by train "for a holiday", but was pushed into the boys' school and the door shut. She worked there until 1914. |
