Summary

[edit]
Description
English: St George, Bloomsbury Way, near to London, City of London, Great Britain.

The tower of Nicholas Hawksmoor's church is yet another of his Baroque masterpieces, built in 1729-31 under the Fifty New Churches Act of 1711. Grade I listed. The tower was inspired by the mausoleum at Halicarnassus, and is crowned by a statue of King George I.

This photo was taken shortly after the church had been restored, one element of which was the reinstatement of the lions and unicorns at the base of the spire (the lions represent England and the unicorns Scotland). The originals were removed in the 1870s ("too frivolous for Victorian taste as well as being potentially unsafe") and lost.
