Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt Cuthbert Ackworth (157).JPG |
Wood carving in St Cuthbert, Ackworth, West Yorkshire, England. The nave and chancel were restored by John West Hugall in 1852-54. The 15th century tower remains. The wood carvers are unidentified, but the work is very similar indeed to the poppyheads in Mill Hill Congregational Chapel, Leeds, built 1848. The wood carvers credited for that work were Edmund Bates (b.ca.1816) and James Adams of Leeds. The firm Bates & Adams flourished as carvers and gilders 1845-1851, working from 5 Gascoigne Yard, Boar Lane, and 9 Basinghall Street, Leeds. (Sources for Bates & Adams: National Portrait Gallery, Preston Chronicle, 30 December 1848, p3) Showing IHS monogram on pulpit. |
