Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt Cuthbert's Building from Main Point - geograph.org.uk - 1325538.jpg |
English: St Cuthbert's Building from Main Point Department store building that was once the main retail outlet of the St Cuthbert's Co-operative Association on the corner of East Fountainbridge and Bread Street. It closed in the 1980s and is now leased to a range of businesses. In the 19th century the junction here was known as Main Point where the road from the city split: the road to the right led to Linlithgow and Stirling; the road to the left to Lanark and Glasgow. A third road, just off the picture to the left (High Riggs), led to Biggar and Carlisle. This spot is believed to be the original Tollcross, where tolls were collected from traffic approaching the West Port. The name was later transferred, first to the lands beyond, known as Orchardfield - the original name of Bread Street - then to the new junction created at the southern end of Lothian Road. |
