Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The tower of St Catherine's Oratory, Chale Down (St Catherine's Hill), Isle of Wight. The oratory was built c. 1328 by Walter de Godeton as penance for taking a cargo of wine belonging to the monastery of Lives in Picardy from the wreck of the Saint Marie which was wrecked on Atherfield Ledge in Chale Bay in 1314. The octagonal tower of the oratory was built for use as a lighthouse (the second oldest surviving lighthouse in Britain), the light of which was tended by the priest of the adjoining oratory chapel. The adjoining chapel fell into disrepair after the dissolution of the monasteries, and buttresses were added to support the structure during the 18th century. The tower was further repaired and restored 1891 and 1950. Known locally as the Pepperpot.
This is a photo of listed building number 1218168.
