Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt Catherine's Church, Preston next Faversham, Kent - Hatchment - geograph.org.uk - 769269.jpg |
English: An early hatchment in St Catherine's Church, Preston next Faversham, Kent. For Frances Wilkins (1611-27 April 1674), died aged 63, a daughter of Thomas Wilkins of Beckles in the parish of Tong, Kent. Wife firstly to Thomas Finch of Eastwell in Kent and secondly to John Spencer of Croft (?) next Sutton-Valence in Kent. Unusual in that shown from wife's position, showing both her husbands. Usually only the last husband is shown on death of a female. For a man however, his hatchment shows arms of all wives impaled. Arms: Finch of Eastwell, Kent (Argent, a chevron between three griffins passant sable) impaling Spencer (Gules, two bars (and in chief as many lions rampant) argent (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.954) all impaling Ermine, on a bend sable three seapies or on a canton of the last a rose gules (Wilkins of Kent). Crest: A talbot collared and holding a branch. (Source: Rev. Carus Vale Collier, Coats of Arms in Kent Churches, Part II, Collected by Rev. Carus Vale Collier, late chaplain of Davington Priory, Coats of Arms in the Church of St Catherine's Church, Preston next Faversham, published in Archaeoligia Cantiana, Vol.23, 1898, p.114[1]) |
