Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt Annes Pier.JPG |
English: Location: The Promenade, St Annes-on-Sea, Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, England.
The beautiful St Annes pier has been welcoming visitors since 1885. St Annes Land and Building Company had decided to build a new pier and work was started in 1879. On 15th June 1885, the Honourable Fred Stanley performed the opening ceremony. In 1975 the Concert Pavilion, which had become neglected, was fully refurbished to hold a centenary concert to be performed by Yehudi Menuhin and his Chamber Orchestra and attended by the Princess Royal. However, within a few weeks of this happening there was a fire and the theatre was completely destroyed and the end of the Pier seriously damaged. Following a further fire in 1982, which was deemed irreparable, the seaward end of the pier was demolished. Protests against the demolition by campaigners, led the local council to decide that the final 150 feet (46 m) should be retained to protect the character of the pier, so the remains of the ruined landing jetty still exist. |
