Description

Monument to Arthur Coke (d.1629), 2nd son of Sir Edward Coke, Lord Chief Justice of England, by his first wife Briget Paston. He married Elizabeth Waldegrave (d.1627), the only daughter and heiress of Sir George Waldegrave (d.1636) of Hitcham, by his first wife Mary Moore daughter of John Moore of Ipswich. Here lyeth Arthur Coke esq third sonne of Sir Edward Coke knight late Lord Chief Justice of England & of the Privie Councel of Kinge James. Here lyeth also buried in the same tombe Elizabeth daughter and sole heire apparent of Sir George Waldegrave knight which Elizabeth christianly and peaceably departed this life the 14th day of November AD 1627 and the said Arthur Coke likewise Christianly and peaceable departed this life at Bury St Edmunds the 6th day of December 1629. They had issue betwene them livinge at their decease four daughters viz Elizabeth, Mary, Winifred and Theophilia whome almightty God prosper and protect (transcribed by jmc4 - Church Explorer).     • 2: Argent, a chevron azure between three chaplets gules (Crispin) (not listed in Burke, 1884)
    • 3: Sable, a chevron between three covered cups or (Folchard / Folkard: ) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.364, "Folchard", but stating "two covered cups")
    • 4: Argent, six fleurs-de-lys azure a chief indented or (Paston of Paston, Norfolk)
