Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt Albans, Roman Verulamium - geograph.org.uk - 1362394.jpg |
English: St Albans: Roman Verulamium Verulamium was the third-largest town in Roman Britain and was occupied between about 15 BC and 450 AD. To gauge the extents of the settlement the defensive wall was some 3.6 kilometres long. At the height of its occupation this area would probably have been covered in villas, but the buildings became derelict and most of the bricks and stones were used in the late 11th century to provide materials for the new Norman Abbey. Just fragments of the old city remain, including a mosaic in the building to the right 1347309.
1350217 is visible to the left. Today this whole area is Verulamium Park. |
