English: Funerary hatchment, Church of St John the Baptist, Chester, showing arms of Wrangham (Argent, three garbs proper on a chief azure as many bezants) with inescutcheon of pretence of Strangways (Sable, two lions passant paly of six argent and gules), with a difference of a canton argent. Latin motto of Wrangham: Hyeme Exsuperata ("when winter has been overcome"). The dexter half is shown black, indicating the death of the husband. The sinister half (for his surviving wife) shows the crest of Strangways (Sable, a lion passant paly of six argent and gules). Possibly therefore for The Venerable w:Francis Wrangham (1769-1842), Archdeacon of the East Riding of Yorkshire, and a Prebendary of Chester, 1827–42, a noted author, translator, book collector and abolitionist. He is buried in the lady chapel of Chester Cathedral, which contains a monument to him by Hardman & Co., dating from 1846. The Strangways inescutcheon is for his second wife Dorothy Cayley, second of the three daughters and co-heiresses of Rev. Digby Cayley of Yorkshire, by his wife Elizabeth Robinson, only daughter and heiress of Thomas Robinson of Welburn, son and heir of Thomas Strangwayes of Pickering (who adopted the surname Robinson as required by the will of Luke Robinson of Riseborough), grandson of Thomas Strangwayes of Southhouse in Yorkshire and of Pickering, who married Jane Robinson, daughter of Luke Robinson of Riseborough. The family was descended from Strangwayes of Harlesey Castle in Yorkshire.
