Description
English: St. Stephen's United Church of Christ, 8520 Tonawanda Creek Road, Clarence, New York, October 2020. One of the town's longest-standing religious institutions, St. Stephen's began as a German Evangelical church with a German-speaking congregation; though the building seen here was erected in 1862, evidence shows the congregation predates the building. The sanctuary is a modest wood-frame structure of vernacular style whose historical integrity is compromised by the addition of vinyl siding; the church hall at left dates to 1990, built to replace an earlier one that had been built in 1931 and lost to fire the previous year. St. Stephen's became a United Church of Christ congregation in 1957. Despite this relative lack of architectural notability, the church's historical importance was sufficient for the Clarence Historic Preservation Commission to approve its nomination as a local landmark.
